Chapter 11

The door closed behind Ryder and a long silence followed, broken only by one of the humans whispering, “Why doesn’t she kick his ass? She kicked everyone else’s ass. Why doesn’t she kick his ass?”

“We seem to be making kind of a habit of this.” I opened proceedings.

While my eyes had been fixed on Ryder, stunned to see him again, and again showing up just at the most inconvenient time, his had been roving about the room, taking in what was going on. He saw the cages, he saw the humans, the last few of whom were now released. He saw the guards in their underwear, tied up, and the discrete piles of dust, that only a vampire would notice, which marked the final resting places of the waiters. He took it all in, and I felt I could almost see the cogs turning in his mind as he worked out what was happening here.

His roving gaze returned to me. Then he pointed to my fake guards. “You should get those guys outside before someone starts asking questions.”

I nodded. “Abbot, Costello; go stand outside the door. If anyone comes near then get your asses back inside.” I turned back to Ryder. “I’ve got a truck warming up outside and they won’t be able to chase us. Just need to get these guys from here to there.”

Ryder nodded. When we had worked together in the Old Guard, I had noted that he had the ability to sort of ‘go professional’. Whatever else was going on, his face would change, like it had been set in stone, and he became the archetype of his profession. One time, we had been out to dinner Topside, on a date, having a lovely time, and the bank across the street had been attacked. That expression had come over his face and he was suddenly all business. That was the expression he had assumed now. It didn’t matter that he had followed me here to apprehend me, that I was New York’s most wanted and the woman who had betrayed him both personally and professionally, all that mattered was the job in hand. He had seen what I was doing, and both his mission and his personal feelings about me ceased to matter. It took a lot to make Ryder ignore a mission, but he was a man with a profound and innate sense of justice; he would help these people because they needed help and because what was going on here was wrong. Then he would arrest me. But he would help the humans first, even if that meant working alongside me.

“Diversion?”

I shook my head. “They’ll be expecting it. They’re expecting me to try to break in.”

The thought struck me at the same moment it struck Ryder.

“It’s a risk,” he said.

“I’m trying to rescue a bunch of humans from the mob; it is an inherently risky affair. You’ll move the humans?”

Ryder nodded.

“Let’s get this shit done.”
